The Minimum Wage Council failed to come up with a new minimum wage fixation system. For now, the ball is in the court of the government and parliament. The Minimum Wage Council cancelled the 4th plenary session slated for March 7 and transferred the report of the deliberation process and the recommendation of experts of the taskforce team to the government.

On March 7, the Minimum Wage Council revealed that "On March 6, the System Improvement Subcommittee failed to reach an agreement although it discussed the agenda for long. The government has been aware of the necessity to improve the minimum wage system and will come up with the improvement measures based on the draft recommendation made by the taskforce team.

On Feb. 21, the 3rd plenary session of the Minimum Wage Council failed to produce a draft agreement for the improvement of the minimum wage system and set up a subcommittee to discuss the points in contention. The subcommittee comprising 6 members, two each from labor, employers and the public interest, has sought to come to a compromise three times up until March 6, but their efforts became abortive.

An official from the Council said that "A number of draft bills concerning the system improvement of the minimum wage have been submitted to the National Assembly and therefore the parliamentary debates are expected to follow sooner or later. The Council plans to actively assist the legislation activity of the National Assembly."

The labor circle and employers blame each other for the deadlock of their deliberation and requested the government's role in this matter.

The focal points in contention are the inclusion of allowances and welfare benefits into the scope of minimum wage calculation and the application of industrial and vocational minimum wages, different from the current national minimum wage system.
