The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport(MOLIT) on August 30 will unveil a plan for the freight transport market development and will finalize the plan by next month.

The MOLIT formed the freight transport market reform committee in May this year where stakeholders were invited to participate.

According to the plan drafted by the committee, the freight transport market will be deregulated to allow corporate(company owned) trucks with less than 1.5 tons to enter the freight transport market.

The unionized freight truckers reacted strongly against the deregulation plan which is threatening the livelihood of self-employed contract truckers, but only serving the interests of big logistics companies.

The Freight Truckers Solidarity Union(Freight Solidarity) organized a press conference on August 24 in front of the national assembly main gate. The union criticized the government market deregulation policy and announced their campaign plans nationwide against the government deregulation policy until September 8.

The Freight Solidarity will hold a national congress on September 24 in Seoul to adopt a general strike resolution. The union demands the government to revoke the market deregulation plan. Otherwise the government will face an all-out resistance of truckers struggling for their right to survive, the union said.

The truckers' strike in June 2008 led by the Freight Solidarity had paralyzed the cargo transport to the ports nationwide.
