The Ministry of Employment and Labor(MOEL) implemented labor inspections on long working hours at 100 companies of second and third tier suppliers in the manufacturing industry of automobiles and metal processed products, first time four years after its labor inspection to five finished-car corporations in 2011 and first tier suppliers in 2012 on the same issue.

The MOEL released its finding that 50 out of 100 inspected companies were found to have violated the statutory limit of 12 hours of overtime work per week. The MOEL added that the long working hour practice has improved even though the rate remained still high.

The companies manufacturing metal processed products show the highest violation rate of 64.1%, followed by the automobiles and trailers manufacturing with 41.9% and the machine and equipment manufacturing with 36.4%.

The violation rate increases even higher when the labor inspections are expanded to other legal provisions stipulated in the labor standards act such as pay on overtime, night work and holiday work or compensation for unused annual leaves. 93 out of 100 inspected companies infringed the act.
