Amid heat waves across the country, the government decided to issue a stop work order at the workplaces where heat strokes occur.

The Ministry of Employment and Labor(MOEL) on July 18 handed out the standard measures for the heat stroke workplaces to the local MOEL offices nationwide. With reminding of the weather forecast that "hot weather including the issuance of heat alerts will continue for some time," MOEL revealed that "when a worker suffers from a heat stroke, labor inspectors will visit the site and determine if the employer has been implementing basic regulations to prevent heat strokes."

According to the 'heat stroke prevention basic regulations', employers should provide the workers with cool and clean water, safe and complete sunlight-blocking shady places where workers can take a rest for enough time without any concerns of hazard or danger from noises and falling objects. Resting time shall be adequately adjusted according the temperature, but longer resting time should be allotted for a weather with high humidity. More resting time should be allotted to newly recruited employees and those who just returned from leaves to make themselves adapt to the heat.

MOEL will issue a stop work order to the workplaces which are found to be in violation of the health and safety regulations for the out-door workers until the danger completely dies down and will conduct an intensive workplace inspection. When labor inspectors determine that an employer is in violation of the occupational safety and health standards, the employer shall be punished by imprisonment of up to five years or by a fine not exceeding fifty million won(US$44,300).
