Labor inspectors who deal with the civil petitions related to law enforcement and compliance at the workplaces are dangerously exposed to the overtasked duties, heavy stress and malicious civil petitioners, and quite a few of them died of the work-related diseases or commit suicides.

A labor inspector only identified with the surname of Mr. Jang who was working at the MOEL's Jinju Local Office, died of a brain aneurysm in July 2016. Before his death, he had been continuously harassed by a malicious civil petitioner for almost a month with numerous malignant messages and calls with insults and curses at all hours of the day and night.

Another labor inspector with the surname of Mr. Kwon who was working as a section chief at the MOEL's Southern Seoul Local Office, died of a cerebral hemorrhage in March last year due to heavy workload and stress, after he was in a coma for three months.

A labor inspector with the surname of Mr. Lee who was working at the MOEL's Daejeon Regional Office, died of acute blood poisoning in December 2012, soon after he lost his consciousness and was sent to the hospital. He even could not take sick leave when he got the symptom.

Another labor inspector with the surname of Mr. Choi who was working at the MOEL's Gwangju Regional Office, committed suicide on Feb. 24 this year, 12 days after he got promotion and transfer to the new position. His workload has been increased 1.6 times more to cover 4.971 workplaces with 37,931 employees. He also had to deal with 83 cases of petitions(79) and complaints(4).

According to a research conducted by the Korean Association for Public Administration, the number of workplaces subject to the administration increased from 1,607,000 in 2013 to 1,863,000 as of April 2017. The number of workers subject to the administration has increased from 14,240,000 to 16,020,000 during the same period.

The government unveiled that it will hire 565 labor inspectors(113 occupational safety and health inspectors and 452 labor inspectors) additionally this year, following the recruitment of 200 labor inspectors(40 occupational safety and health inspectors and 160 labor inspectors) last year.
