The Minimum Wage Council held its 8th plenary session on Jun. 28, the deadline set for the next year's minimum wage deliberation period. The meeting was held with the absence of all workers' members of the Council.

The Minimum Wage Council clarified its position again that it will observe the legally set deadline for the determination of the minimum wage. The recent decision by the Federation of Korean Trade Unions(FKTU) to return to the Minimum Wage Council has made possible for the Council to convene upcoming plenary meetings with the participation of workers' members, even though for now workers' members of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions(KCTU) are still refusing their participation in the Council in protest.

Prof. Ryu Jang-soo, chairman of the Minimum Wage Council, said that "we did not observe the legally set deadline for the minimum wage deliberation, but we will do our best to comply with the legally set deadline for the minimum wage determination at any cost." "Even though the given time is short, we will do our best to come up with the new minimum wage proposal that workers, employers and the people can accept through the effective and intensive discussions." he added.

Prof. Ryu also said that "the plenary session today made it clear to set the deadline for the conclusion of the minimum wage proposal by July 14, and we will have intensive discussions to produce a proposal for two weeks so that the Employment and Labor Minister can determine the new minimum wage by August 5."
