Kim Ju-young, president of the Federation of Korean Trade Unions(FKTU) and Rep. Hong Young-po, floor leader of the ruling Democratic Party held a high-level policy consultation meeting on Jun. 27 at the National Assembly and signed "an agreement on the improvement of the minimum wage system and the implementation of a policy pact". Both sides agreed to make a policy pact and commit to its implementation to protect the low wage workers who are directly affected by the amendment to the Minimum Wage Act and to assist small business owners and self-employed micro business owners.

FKTU will be returning to the Minimum Wage Council after it had withdrawn its participation in the Council as workers' members last month in protest of the passage of the amendment to the Minimum Wage Act by the National Assembly. As the legal deadline to determine the minimum wage for next year is drawing near(August 5), it seems that FKTU decided to be a party directly involved in the minimum wage determination process as the minimum wage is the real wage to the low wage workers.
