South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un declared the opening of 'an era of peace on the Korean peninsula'. The two leaders promised to establish the peace regime through the "complete denuclearization" on the Korean peninsula and the declaration of "an end to the war" within this year. They also agreed to the full and innovative improvement and development of the inter-Korean relations. It is anticipated that the decision to implement a variety of plans for the cooperation, exchanges, visits and contacts at all levels of society between the two Koreas would open 'an era of South and North Korean workers'

The two leaders agreed to have a high-level meeting for the full and innovative improvement and development of the inter-Korean relations at the earliest possible time and to establish a joint liaison office in Gaeseong in North Korea and to hold reunions for families separated by the Korean War, a symbol of the painful division of nation, on Aug. 15 this year.

They also promised the inter-Korean economic cooperation by actively pursuing the agreed projects contained in the Oct. 4 Declaration in 2007. The railroads and roads on the eastern transportation corridor and Seoul-Sinuiju will be connected and the practical measures for its modernization and use will be prepared. In particular, attention is paid to a point that a variety of plans for the cooperation, exchanges, visits and contacts at all levels of society between the two Koreas will be boosted.

A soccer team jointly formed by the Federation of Korean Trade Unions(FKTU) and Korean Confederation of Trade Unions(KCTU) from South Korea held a friendly soccer game with the General Federation of Trade Unions of North Korea(GFTUK) in 2015 in Pyongyang, North Korea. The next soccer game was planned to be held in Seoul in 2016, but it was not realized due to the strained relations bewteen the two Koreas. Lee Seong-gyung, FKTU general sectary, said that "FKTU will work toward the resumption of the inter-Korean workers reunification soccer game." "Gaeseong Industrial Complex in North Korea should be reopened at the earliest possible time so that workers of both Koreas can work together again there," he added.

Eom Mi-gyung, KCTU unification committee president, said that "If things go well, we can hold a workers' representatives meeting between South Korea and North Korea by May to discuss the installment of the forced labor statue in Pyongyang, the statue symbolizing the victims by the Japanese Imperial Government, and the inter-Korean workers reunification soccer game." She also unveiled a proposal to be suggested to North Korea's GFTUK that in 2022, workers of the two Koreas take trains together bound for Beijing, China, to support the teams from Korea competing in the Beijing Winter Olympic Games."
