Early last month, Korean administrative staff who are not dispatched from Korea but locally recruited by the Korean diplomatic missions in 183 countries around the world formed a labor union and affiliated with the Jungbu Region Public Industry Trade Union of the Federation of Korean Trade Unions(FKTU) with approximately 300 union members.

In recent, labor union and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs(MOFA) had a meeting to discuss the matter related to the treatment of the administrative staff of the diplomatic missions abroad. Labor union called on the MOFA, which is in charge of managing the diplomatic missions abroad and holds the actual authority on them, to sit at the negotiation table. Labor union also demanded paid time-off for union officials representing administrative staff working in neighboring countries like China and Japan to enable them to participate in the working level negotiations.

MOFA revealed a positive stance in the meeting with labor union, saying that "it is aware of the difficulties that administrative staff of the diplomatic missions abroad face." The Ministry also requested labor union to "work together to improve the treatment of administrative staff." Labor union is preparing the demand list, targeting the first round of working level negotiation within this month.
