Kim Ju-young, president of the Federation of Korean Trade Unions(FKTU) said that "The spirit of the respect of labor which lacks in the present Constitution should be embedded in the new Constitution."
Kim Myung-hwan, president of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions(KCTU) insisted that "The Constitution should be amended in the direction toward the effective guarantee of labor rights and equal rights."
The Federation of Korean Trade Unions(FKTU) and Korean Confederation of Trade Unions(KCTU) announced their joint demand proposal for the amendment of the Constitution which is expected to be decided by the national referendum slated for this year, 30 years after the constitutional amendment was made in 1987 for the direct presidential election system.
They called for "the amendment of the Constitution to fully guarantee labor rights for the working people who are in fact most of the nation" in a press briefing on 'the revision of the Constitution for the working people' held at the press room of the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul on March 6. While lamenting that "The Constitution enshrines very weak perspectives toward labor, since any words to depict labor are hardly found in the current Constitution," they insisted that "The new Constitution moving beyond the 30-year old Constitution should be prepared to establish a fairer and happier society for the working people."
The union demand proposal contains 8 core tasks; △ right to work for all(protection from unfair dismissal and principle of direct employment), △ principle of fair wage and equal wage for equal value of work), △ full guarantee of basic labor rights(inclusion of an objective article on basic labor rights and full guarantee of basic labor rights for the public employees and workers in major defense industries), △ restoration of the fair profit-sharing right and guarantee of workers' right to participate in the management in the private sector, △ principle of publicness of infrastructure public service and health and medical service, △ actualization of the right to live with human dignity(adequate income and guarantee of social and health service), △ shaping and actualization of the right to gender equality, and △ expansion of right to safety and right to health.
