A worker only identified as the surname of Lee, 49, of the Korea Airport Service(KAS), a subsidiary of the Korean Air and the largest airport ground handling service company in Korea collapsed and died soon after his arriving at the office on the morning of December 13. Late Lee is found to have worked an average 50 hours of overtime in a month. There were 5 to 6 days in a month without 10 consecutive hours of rest between finishing a day's work and returning to work next day.
Considering about two hours of commuting time back and forth and additional meal time, he seemed to have slept only three to four hours in such days. An analysis on the overtime situation of the company showed that deadly overtime of 100 hours in a month was not unusual. The Korean Public Service and Transport Workers' Union(KPTU) called on the Ministry of Employment and Labor(MOEL) to implement a special labor inspection and filed a complaint against KAS CEO Kang Young-sik with the MOEL for the infringement of the Labor Standards Act, Trade Union and Labor Relations Adjustment Act, and Occupational Safety and Health Act.
