The Seoul Metropolitan Government on January 19 unveiled its plan to run seven winter shelters for day laborers who are looking for day-labor jobs on the sidewalks of several special streets where day labor markets are formed at dawn. These winter shelters for day laborers will provide them with a space to stay inside away from severe cold weather until March.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government has been running three winter shelters before it added up four more winter shelters this year. Winter shelters are open in streets where more than 1,000 day laborers congregate to await for the arrival of employers who will hire them for day labor from 4 at dawn to 8 in the morning every day. The shelters are make-shift tents with heaters and hot drinks for day laborers awaiting for job offers.

Jung Jin-woo, director of the employment policy department of the Seoul Metropolitan Government said that Seoul in coordination with district offices will make efforts to improve the vulnerable working environment of day laborers during the winter season.
